WESTCOUNTRY GARDENS TOUR


SPRING GARDENS TOUR 2010

16th to 21st May 2010

Sunday arrival and Friday departure

Terms start from £650.00 per person for the five nights to include dinner, bed and breakfast, lunches and afternoon teas, coach travel from the hotel to the gardens, entrance fee to all gardens, talks as detailed in the programme and VAT @ 17.5%

SPRING GARDENS TOUR PROGRAMME

Day 1

3.30pm Arrival for Devonshire Cream Tea served in the Hotel’s main Lounge.

6.45pm Julie Baugh, Hotel Director, welcomes you and invites you to join her in the Lounge for a welcome drink before dinner.

7.15pm Table d’hôte Dinner is served in the Margaret Amelia Restaurant . Dinner is followed by coffee in the Lounge with an introduction to the gardens.

Day 2

From 7.45am Breakfast in the Restaurant.

10.00am Depart from the Hotel to travel to Garden House

Garden House is an 8 acre tapestry of delight with naturalistic planting which allows flowers to intermingle and work in harmony with nature.

11.00 am Arrive Garden House for Coffee and introductory Talk

1.00pm Light Lunch

2.00pm Depart Garden House and Travel to Lukesland at Ivybridge

Lukesland is a beautiful woodland garden in a stream-fed valley. This provides perfect conditions for rhododendrons and azaleas, which are magnificent at this time of year.

2.30pm Arrive at Lukesland for an introductory talk by one of the gardeners.

4.00pm Afternoon Tea and then depart Lukesland and return to the hotel.

7.30pm- Table d’ Hôte Dinner served at your convenience in the Restaurant

Day 3

From 7.45am Breakfast in the Restaurant

9.30am Depart from the Hotel to travel to Higher Knowle, Lustleigh on the edge of Dartmoor.

Higher Knowle is a 3 acre garden developed over the past 41 years with gorgeous views towards Dartmoor. Magnolias, Camellias and Rhododenrons on carpets of Primroses and Bluebells.

10.30am Arrive at Higher Knowle for coffee and an introductory talk.

1.00pm Light lunch in Bovey Tracey.

2.00pm Depart from Bovey Tracey

2.45pm Arrive at The Cider House for an introductory talk .

The Cider House is a beautiful garden situated in peaceful surrounds overlooking the Tavy Valley where you can enjoy the fantastic rhododendrons, camellias and much more...

4.30pm Cream Tea at The Cider House.

5.00pm Depart The Cider House to return to the Hotel

7.30pm to 9.00pm- Table d’ Hôte Dinner.

Day 4

From 7.45am Breakfast in the Restaurant

9.00am Depart from the Hotel to travel to Cotehele.

The formal gardens and terraces around the medieval house overlook the richly planted valley garden below, which descends to the riverside complete with pools, an ornamental tower and a dovecote.

10.30am Arrive at Cotehele for coffee and an introductory talk.

1.00pm Light lunch.

2.00pm Depart Cotehele and travel to Saltram

The main house is located in 500 acres of landscaped parkland. Adjacent to the main building are a collection of formal 18th century gardens, including follies, an orangery and lovely old trees and flowering shrubs.

2.45pm Arrive at Saltram

4.30pm Afternoon Tea.

5.00pm Depart from Saltram and travel back to the Hotel.

7.30pm to 9.00pm -Table d’ Hôte Dinner..

Day 5

From 7.45am Breakfast in the Restaurant

9.00am Depart from the Hotel to travel to Dartmouth and take the Ferry to Greenway, a glorious woodland garden on the banks of the Dart estuary, renowned for the hardy plants under planted with native wild flowers. Once home to Agatha Christie, the garden has a romantic atmosphere of wilderness and mystery.

10.15am Arrive at Greenway for coffee and introductory talk.

12.45pm Lunch at Greenway.

1.30pm Depart Greenway forr Coleton Fishacre.

2.00pm  Arrive at Coleton Fishacre for a tour of the gardens followed by afternoon tea

The 25 acres of gardens, set in a sheltered, steam-fed valley, are luxuriant in all seasons. The wide variety of exotic plants provides interest throughout the year. bamboos, minosas, Mrytle and other moisture-loving plants grow profusely around the pool and streams.

4.00pm Depart for Hotel

7.15pm Glass of bubbly on the terrace followed by dinner in the Restaurant.

From 7.45am Breakfast in the Restaurant

Please note, this itinerary is subject to change at the Director’s discretion.

Some gardens have awkward paths and steep inclines and may not therefore be suitable for all guests. We recommend wearing sensible walking shoes and wet weather gear.
